Recently, LE SSERAFIM‘s Yunjin and Chaewon got mixed reactions for the outfits they’re wearing in the comeback trailer “Good Bones”.
The two members drew attention for their “underwear” fashion in the video, with some netizens even calling the looks “trashy” and “too much”. Others, however, didn’t see a problem with the outfit choice, and find the look edgy and cool.
It has sparked a conversation online about more “scandalous” outfits worn by K-Pop idols throughout the years, and one female soloist’s name came up as a pioneer for the “pantsless” trend in the industry: Uhm Junghwa.
The legendary singer went for the controversial look during the promotional stages for her song “Come To Me” in 2006, flaunting her gorgeous figure.
She was 37 at the time, making the risqué outfits even more surprising and impressive due to her being “older” than the average active K-Pop idol.
But she looked effortlessly cool and confident in the bold and daring style, and helped to pave the way for female idols in terms of freedom of expression in their clothing.
Today’s popular female idols such as Jessi and MAMAMOO‘s Hwasa have followed in Junghwa’s footsteps when it comes to daring outfits!
Here’s what netizens have to say about Uhm Junghwa’s pioneering in K-Pop fashion!
When NCT made their debut, their concept was a group that would continue to expand through the years, debuting both new members and units.
In 2023, it was announced that NCT’s never-ending expansion would end with the debut of the last subunit made of new members. This new unit, first called NCT NEW TEAM, was finally given their name, NCT WISH, in January 2024.
The other members of NCT have been featured in NCT WISH’s social media content to welcome the new unit.
Recently, however, NCT’s Haechan offered his opinion on the new unit, sparking mixed reactions in the process.
During a live stream, Haechan chatted with fans about various topics, including NCT WISH. During the final episode of the survival show that formed the group, Haechan was featured as a special guest, so it makes sense that he would be asked about the group.
Haechan began by saying what he was saying was his personal opinion and that it wasn’t easy to see the new unit as teammates due to it being his 8th year as an idol. He added that he does feel affection for them as new members, however, and that he wanted the best for them.
This is a personal opinion, really. But I’ve been doing this for 8 years now… They’re just debuting when I’m celebrating my 8th anniversary. So it’s not the easiest to see them as teammates yet… Like, I don’t feel all that close to them right now. But they’re the maknae members of NCT, a group that we worked really hard to build. So, I do feel affectionate toward them. I really want the best for them.
— Haechan
He continued, saying that it was OK not to see them as part of the team, referencing how each unit has different groups of fans and leaving it up to fans to decide if they wanted to like them or not.
That being said, I am kind of curious… I mean, isn’t it OK if you don’t quite see them as a part of the team? When NCT first started, it started as separate teams. And the fandom consisted of different groups of fans for each of those teams. That was what was intended, too. So, while I think it’d be great if you liked them, it’s up to you guys.
— Haechan
On one hand, what Haechan said is true — each unit has their own group of fans, sometimes overlapping, meaning it would not be unusual for this to happen with NCT WISH. Because of how NCT WISH were selected, a survival show only viewable through a subscription service, many in the fandom have already felt disconnected.
Many appreciated his honesty and agreed with what he said.
Some feel Haechan’s comment was not well-timed, as NCT WISH will debut soon, and many NCTzens have already hesitated to accept the unit due in part to their ages. Many reflected on how the fandom’s different groups of fans often clash with each other and how Haechan’s words could be used negatively.
You can check out NCT WISH’s introductory video below.
Have you ever wondered how K-Pop idols are assigned their positions in their group?
Former MOMOLAND member Daisy recently revealed how she became a rapper, and the unexpected story has gone viral.
Recently, Daisy has been sharing stories from her past life as a K-Pop idol via her TikTok account, where she has garnered nearly 800k followers.
This month, Daisy posted a video lip-syncing to Ice Spice‘s new song “Think U The Sh*t (Fart).” Daisy jokingly captioned it, “What kpop raps would sound like i was still an idol,” and added, “jk i could never come up with this.”
It went viral with 4.4M views at the time of writing. One netizen honestly asked her if she had wanted to rap or sing when she became a K-Pop idol.
Daisy replied, thanking the commenter, explaining that she had wanted to “defend herself.” So, she told the story of how she became a rapper in a get-ready-with-me style video.
I’ve been wanting to defend myself about this for forever.
— Daisy
She explained that originally, she had never auditioned with raps. Instead, Daisy would sing and/or dance. Yet, she realized that she needed something to help her stand out.
I have never once walked into an audition with a rap or… not a single bar. I always went into auditions with like a little song and a little dance, and that’s it. But when you’re a trainee, that’s another word for being unemployed. And when you’re unemployed, you’re very desperate, and desperate times calls for desperate measures.
— Daisy
Daisy tried to think what could be her special talent. Finally, she remembered that she had memorized Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj‘s hit song “Super Bass.”
So, when you’re a trainee, you want to stand out. You want to be different. Like any good person would do, I was scouring my brain for anything that I knew how to do, like a little secret talent of mine. And that took me back all the way to the year of 2010, which just so happened to be the year of the worldwide cultural phenomenon of tweens all over the world memorizing Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ word for word as if it was gonna be on the ACT’s, and I just so happened to be the president of the Korean branch. So, I gave them a little, ‘This one is for the boys with the boomin’ system.’
— Daisy
This is what ultimately impressed the company staff in Daisy’s audition. From that day forward, she was a rapper, all thanks to a Nicki song she had learned in sixth grade.
And these clueless 40-year-olds were absolutely blown away, and from that day on, I was a rapper. Shoutout to me in the sixth grade.
— Daisy
However, Daisy had never dreamed of being a rapper. She actually wanted to be a singer. But at least she was no longer just a trainee, and she accepted it.
So, first, I was kind of like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done to myself?’ Because I really wanted to like sing more, but then, you know, I learned to kind of accept it during my short-lived career.
— Daisy
Daisy confessed that whenever she sees comments praising her “rap skills,” she can’t help but laugh, knowing the truth. Still, she had fun with it.
And this is why it’s so funny for me whenever I get like a comment saying like, ‘Oh my God, I love you or like you’re such a good rapper.’ I’m like, I laugh at the comments so hard because what are you talking about? Did you listen to my part on mute? Like I will admit as horrible as it was, it was a little silly. It was fun.
— Daisy
Her video went viral with 2.2 views on TikTok. It’s also been reposted on X (formerly Twitter), where it has garnered over 4 million views too.
Yall Daisy from Momoland just explained how she became a rapper and I’m SCREAMING pic.twitter.com/R6Rx9wRxNS
Netizens can’t help but think the story is so funny and low-key relatable, as many people in Daisy’s generation memorized the iconic Nicki Minaj rap. Yet, fans also didn’t totally agree with her self-criticism. Her verse in “BBoom BBoom” will never not eat.
The funniest part is that there is also video evidence of the story Daisy told. Her “Super Bass” audition was featured in Mnet‘s reality survival show Finding Momoland, which formed the group. Daisy actually finished the competition in first place!
This week, former DPR business manager REM (also known as Scott Kim) has come under fire.
In 2014, DPR (Dream Perfect Regime), a multi-genre music label and video production company, was co-founded by Christian Yu (also known as IAN and former C-Clown‘s Rome), Scott Kim (also known as REM), Hong Dabin (also known as LIVE)—all of whom attach the label’s acronym “DPR” to their names—each playing a different part in the creative collective.
Fans were surprised when REM resigned from his position on January 12, 2023, the same day it was announced that DPR LIVE + DPR IAN were performing at 2023 Coachella.
Important sidenote* – starting this year, I’ve come to the decision that its ultimately best I release myself of all management responsibilities going forward in regards to DPR. This may come to a surprise for many as I’ve always prided myself on being that position for this team
For a while, fans assumed that REM might simply be taking a break. Yet, DPR LIVE didn’t include him in an appreciation post at the end of the Regime Tour Seoul Finale, alluding that REM was no longer part of DPR.
Now, Dabin has released the diss track “WMP freestyle” as part of his new EP Giggles, and it’s about REM. Throughout the song, Dabin exposes a person who scammed him out of money by “selling” his “voice,” and he mentions him by name with the line, “Taking a REM sleep.”
Dabin has made it quite clear to fans that REM and DPR didn’t part ways amicably as he shouted out “F*ck REM!” live at the Giggles Listening Party. Since then, fans have called out REM for allegedly scamming Dabin.
As DPR fans initially trusted REM, and he allegedly was involved in producing some of their favorite DPR IAN songs, they expressed anger and disappointment.
Yet, according to DPR IAN, REM never was involved in the production. DPR IAN cleared up this misconception as he explained that he had seen “a lot of people think REM produced my songs for some reason.” He confirmed that only he and DPR CREAM had produced the songs in question.
I don’t know where you get that from. He did not make any of my songs… at all. And, I told them to correct that on the credits. I have no idea why it’s written like that on the credits, but that’s absolutely not the case.
— DPR IAN
DPR IAN talked on his recent live about the rumour that REM has written all his songs
After both DPR LIVE and DPR IAN called REM out, REM returned to social media after months of inactivity. Yet, he only apologized to Dabin, which was not well-received by the fandom.
i hope you receive this message in love more than anything else dabin. despite everything, i still believe deep down you know my heart better than most. I sincerely pray that this becomes a step in healing as well as reconnecting..
— Scott Kim
if you’ve met each other, dabin wouldn’t go THAT far, ian won’t talk about how HIS songs is under ur name, they’ve kept it all for so long not explaining anything and it benefits you as well, you don’t fckn know how people doubt what dabin tried to tell us months ago, people are… https://t.co/5jwhNkXooc
Finally, REM returned to X to address the allegations that he wrongfully took credit for producing DPR IAN’s songs. He claimed another employee made a “mix up” while “inputting metadata,” and he claimed to have spoken to Ian personally about the matter.
to set things straight, i have and will continue to make my amends internally within the team. Also, regarding ian’s producer credits, i have addressed this to him personally already, but to clear up the confusion, that was not done by me nor have I tried to purposefully take credit for producing any of his songs up until this point. That was a mistake on behalf of one of our employees that was in charge of inputting metadata at the time. I would not flagrantly take production credit in front of Ian – especially when I was not involved in it. I am not a music producer by any means. i was the executive producer however, and I believe that was the mix up that had been made.
— Scott Kim (REM)
to set things straight, i have and will continue to make my amends internally within the team. Also, regarding ian’s producer credits, i have addressed this to him personally already, but to clear up the confusion, that was not done by me nor have I tried to purposefully take…
Still, fans think it’s suspicious. DPR didn’t have many known employees, so there are limited choices to blame. Considering he was the business manager, fans are not buying REM’s statement, especially since he did not tag DPR IAN like he tagged Dabin in the previous post.
he blamed someone else and who was in charge FOR THAT?
if you search “iite cool” producers some articles from 2021 will show up stating that mf is the producer, that means it’s been like that SINCE 2021 and he didn’t check it? he had to wait for ian to tell everybody? and now he blamed someone for that? anjing pic.twitter.com/9MB4LBjhSX
wrong credits for 1-2 songs could be considered as mistakes ok! but there are 28 songs under rem’s name, and it benefits him. i’m not talking about royalties, it’s about how credits could affect people’s trust for dpr and ian himself, who heard lot of people say their fav dpr… pic.twitter.com/2rVp11USff
